What? Doesn’t the Warsaw Radio Mast exist anymore?

As long as I can remember I’ve known that the tallest construction on earth is the Warsaw Radio Mast in Poland. With a height of 646 meters it’s way taller than both the CN Tower in Toronto (553 m), Sears Tower in Chicago (527 m to top of antenna) and the newly built Taipei 101 in Taiwan (509 m to top of spire).

Today I read an article on Wikipedia about the present construction of the Burj Dubai skyscraper. The current height of the tower is 512 m – 3 meters higher than the current highest skyscraper in the world, Taipei 101.

I didn’t even know about this project, still I think it’s very interesting with skyscrapers… I’m a little amazed that I’ve managed to completely miss the project in Dubai.

I followed some links on Wikipedia about tall buildings and structures, and eventually the shock was on me. The Warsaw Radio Mast collapsed in August 1991 – almost 16 years ago. I didn’t know that, I’ve been living in a false world for sixteen years!

The mast collapsed during maintenance work with the wires that keeps the mast stable. Two responsible persons on the firm, which maintained the mast, were sentenced to 2 respective 2.5 years for causing the catastrophe.

Weekend report

Yesterday we went for a ride in our neighborhood. We visited a couple of tiny villages situated in the middle of the forest (like everything else here).

In the first village there was some kind of event, a flea market and an outdoor café. We went over the market rather fast and decided to continue to the next village, but first we stopped by the church for a quick visit.

In the next village we visited a sheep farm were they make cheese from sheep milk. The cheese is kind of famous, but I’m not going to try it – I don’t eat stuff that’s moldy…

Before we went home we stopped by a very nice lake to grill some hotdogs.

Saturday night I discovered a new hobby: editing/adding articles on WikiPedia. I like to read all kind of articles there, and why not contribute to such a good site? I’ve edited/added articles both in Swedish and English.

Now I have to go to work for a couple of hours. I promised to do some cleaning (well, run a cleaning program) on one of our machines because we didn’t have the time to do that Friday night.

Sunset - Friday evening

I had to stay at work untill 10 pm, as there was much work to do - and in addition things just had to malfunction…

We ran out of one very important thing, and we searched the whole warehouse without luck. Of course there was no one to call (who could check the stock in the computer, or tell us what to do) due to the late hour, so we had to improvise.

It’s SO irritating when something like this happens! It’s not the first time, it happens all the time (at least once a week).

On my way home there was a gorgeous sunset!

Friday

I’m working the evening shift this week (2 pm to 10 pm). It’s only one shift left to work before the weekend, but it’s the worst one – being at work until 10 pm Friday evening really sucks! I hope we’ll be able to go home earlier, but it depends on the amount of work that has to be done today.

On Wednesday we went to a nearby lake to take some photos. It was very windy and it was about to start raining any minute.

This photo is not in b/w, it’s the light that makes it look like I’ve desaturated it. I used a different setting in the camera to measure the light - spotmeasured instead of evaluated. You can get very dramatic photos using this setting (and it’s perfect if you want to take photos of clouds or the moon).

Correct me!

Please correct me if you find something wrong, or a strange expression, in my posts!

The purpose with this blog is to get more experience in writing about all and everything in English, and I’ll be glad if you tell me when I type something wrong, (i.e. misspell a word or use the wrong grammar).

If you do that, you’ll help me improve my English writing. Thanks in advance!

Allergy season

Yesterday was the hardest day so far this summer for my allergy - itchy eyes, runny nose and such. I’m allergic to pollen from birches, mugwort (that’s a funny word, sounds as something from Harry Potter) and grass. My allergy season usually starts at the end of March and last until September.

Can you tell that I love winter?

Strange Maps

I found a very interesting site/blog yesterday when I was about to create this blog. I was checking out the wordpress-site (but eventually I decided to host my blog here on blogsome), and one of the links there was to Strange Maps. For a map-geek like me there was tons of interesting/fun stuff to read.

This is My Spot in the World.

My purpose with this blog is to get more experience in writing in English. Since my native language is Swedish the posts may contain both English and Swedish (maybe to explain something or when I need help with a translation).
